You’d expect ILS professionals and supportability engineers to argue that the devil is in the detail. And, when it comes to bottoming-out design, build and operational constraints it certainly is. For example, when you’re considering long-term durability of product materials, or their potential availability, it makes sense to ensure you have the methods and experience to understand the constraints you’re dealing with upfront. Right?
Yes… however, it’s also important to ensure you don’t lose sight of the detail as projects or programmes progress. Once you’ve created solutions to supportability constraints, make sure your ILS thinking is fully integrated with the implementation of your system design, to identify new hurdles and ensure expectations are managed effectively.
In fact, keep a careful eye on existing and emerging constraints, through your change management approach, if you want to keep a handle on project risk and optimise project performance.

But don’t think of constraints as dull and negative. Instead, celebrate the excitement they bring!
